Yrs 9-11 final 21 March and 28 March 2009
Match Report 21/28 March by Jonathan Lawrence
Karaka A came into the final match against Drury with the confidence of having beating the opponents just 2 weeks prior. Captain Ryan Bullock lost the toss and for the second week in a row Karaka was put in to bat. That’s where Karaka’s nightmares came true as a horror start left them reeling at 31 for 3 off 15 overs. Makeshift opener Owen Ford started bravely but soon fell caught behind to Drury’s opening quick bowler, with captain Ryan and big-hitting left hander Zac Hope back on the sidelines soon after as well.
Brad O’Callaghan and opener Jonny Lawrence began the rebuild before Brad was clean bowled for 16 by a medium pacer with the score on 60. Josh Hare played one of his most sensible innings as he and Jonny brought the score to triple figures before he fell LBW for 9. Morgan Brady was bowled just two overs later for 1. Enter Ben Jenkins, who with Karaka under threat of being bowled out played a swash-buckling 38 off just 21 balls (including 3 big sixes) to help Jonny reach his unbeaten half century as Karaka reached an unlikely 164/6 off our 40 overs.
Drury’s first innings began brightly with Ryan knocking over two sets of stumps to have them 2 down for less than 20. It got much worse for Karaka though as Drury’s big hitter hit and unbeaten 55 before the close of the first day with Drury sitting pretty at 95/2 with 21 overs left. Karaka began the second day brightly picking up two quick wickets through Zac, but again opportunities fell and Drury finished 202/7 with a lead of 38. The only highlight of the innings being Zac’s four wickets.
Karaka came out of the blocks quickly in the second innings, wiping the 38-run deficit off in just over 4 overs. Zac and Jonny pushing the team past 50 in only 5 overs, before Zac was caught on the boundary for 19 and Jonny was caught two balls later for 31, just two runs short of a 50 average for the season. Captain Ryan and Brad then added quick runs to get to 116/2 before Karaka declared, a lead of 79 and just over an hour to bowl the Drury team out. Drury got off to a flyer and it was always an uphill battle from there for Karaka, who only picked up one wicket as Drury dashed to their target in less than 13 overs. Karaka may have lost the final, but each player proved themselves as valuable members of the team and improved drastically throughout the season.
