Hawkes Bay Cricket Camps

The Hawkes Bay Cricket Camps were established in 1979 and have been organised by Hawkes Bay Cricket Association since the 2001/2002 cricket season. They have been a very successful breeding ground for a number of first class and New Zealand cricketers with Shayne O'Connor, Chris Nevin, Jacob Oram and Matthew Sinclair to name a few.

The camps are held in the January school holidays with seven grades. High emphasis is on enjoyment and participation for the children but there is also a large element based on coaching and development. They are seen as a huge part of the growth of cricket in the North Island.

Karaka Cricket Club supports this concept and has been involved in sending numerous teams for many years. There are six games of cricket played over four days (that's half a season's club cricket in just four days!). Most players continue to return year after year.

Players, coaches and managers stay at Riverbend for under 10, 11, 12, 13 boys grades and under 14 Girls Grade.

The Under 14 and 16 Grades accommodation is at Napier Boys High School.

In 2010 Karaka Cricket Club was represented by two teams of very keen cricketers. Thank you to the managers, coaches and parents who supported and organised the teams.

24/1/10 Message from Craig Findlay, Organiser:

Hi there,

I’d like to thank everyone for attending the Hawke’s Bay Cricket Camps. We had a lot more rain than we usually have in January and it sounds like it’s going to continue to be up and down for the next month or so.

Here is a brief summary of the cricket camps.

· 96 teams attended the cricket camps (included two Invitation XI’s)

· 231 games played over 17 days

· 6 x hattricks

· 41 x fifties

· 4 x hundreds

· There were 64 teams from outside the Napier/Hastings area.

· Over 600 families visited Hawke’s Bay to watch there children play cricket.

I will try and finalise dates for 2011 in the next few weeks as the Colgate Games are in Hawke’s Bay next year. I usually wait for Central Districts, Wellington and Northern Districts to give me there tournament dates but I won’t do this as I know accommodation will be hard to find during the Colgate Games.

Enjoy the rest of the Cricket season and any feedback about the Cricket Camps is much appreciated either positive or negative as I’m always trying to make them better for all involved.

Warm regards

Craig
